SUNRISE
Bartabas and his horse Le Caravage
Nezih Uzel and Kudsi Erguner - France

Bartabas, the celebrated equestrian, creator and presenter of Thé â tre Zingaro, is coming to Fes to present Sunrise. For this exceptional event, he will be accompanied, as he has been since the first performance of this show in Paris at the Festival of the Imaginary, by two great Sufi musicians, Nezih Uzel and Kudsi Erguner.
‘Barbatas loves the sun as it’s just coming up, no matter where: on a hill, on a wall covered in plants, in a garden. Our star, that starts just by tinting the sky, becomes a promise; a promise of the day tocome, of revelation, of the accomplishment of the future, either near or far. The first rays glow uncertainly, but invite us to meditate upon the presence and mysterious eclipse of the other side of the earth, life, of that beyond. How better to share this mystical moment with your friends than through music?’
Barbatas also loves horses, their dance, the questions in their gentle eyes, their devotion and bravery and their timid cry for life, after night has fallen. To bring musicians and horses together early in the morning is to give the coming day and moment of grace. This is Bartabas’ idea!
Nezih Uzel, singer, and Kudsi Erguner, flautist, are both Turkish Sufis. They are coming to Fes to invite man and horse of the dawn to share this idea of beauty.
The concept of Sunrise is to link ancient ceremonies with our modern world, the great mythical figures of the beginning of time: Krishna sending his steeds into the cosmos, Apollo riding his chariot, Hippolytus upon the azure waves, Genghis Khan leaving behind clouds of dust on the taiga, Odin and Siegfried riding over the frozen mountains of the night.
Very early in the morning, Le Caravage will come stepping into the Merinides Quarry. At his side, Bartabas, an attentive cavalier. And Nezih and Kudsi, with the subtle tones of voice and instrument, will create a melody of the first mornings of the world.’
