Jahida Wehbé

Lebanon

Jahida Wehbé is a true all-round performer. Poet, comedienne in the theatre, on television and for the cinema, orator of poetry, she is also a singer/songwriter. ‘Her voice gets into our very souls’, ‘A silken voice’, ‘the top tarab performer’ says the Arab press about Jahida Wehbé concerts.

Born in Lebanon in 1969, Jahida Wahbé studied at the University of the Lebanon and at the Lebanese National Conservatory of Music where she learned Oriental, Syrian, lyrical songs and studied the oud (oriental lute). Working with the great Lebanese theatre producers and with fellow comedienne Nidal al Achkar, she soon became her famous in Lebanon . She is not only known for the exceptional quality of her voice, but also for the rigour with which she chooses her repertoire. She only sings songs that were either composed for her, or were composed by writers of the inimitable 20s, such as Zakaria Ahmad, Sayed Darwich and Mohamed Kassabji. The words are always those of great poets.

Jahida Wahbé has performed in most countries across the world, including the Cairo Opera, but has never been to Morocco . In Fes , she will dedicate part of her concert to Jalaludin Rumi, whose mystique and poetry she particularly loves. She will also present some of the work that has made her one of the greatest tarab performers in the world.
