VOICES OF THE MAGHREB

Over the past few years, the world has discovered artists of great talent from Algeria , Tunisia and Morocco , who now perform internationally. Arab song is no longer the preserve only of Egyptian or Middle Eastern stars. Algerian, Tunisian and Moroccan singers have made a remarkable impact recently, all the more remarkable because this sound has very quickly spread from just the Arab world to the international scene. Three of these stars are to appear in Fes ; three great voices that have entranced their audiences not only at the Cairo Opera but also in Paris , London and New York .

Sonia M’barek was born in Tunisia and graduated from the National Music Conservatory in Tunis . She has won many prizes in Tunisia and France , including the Diapason d’Or for her third CD Takht. In the last decade, she has taken part in many music festivals in the Arab world, in Europe and in the USA .

Beihdja Rahal grew up in Algiers in a family where Arab-Andalous music was played each day. She studied song with the grand master Mohamed Khaznadji and also learned to play a type of lute called kuitra. In Paris in 1993, she started her own orchestra El Beihdja, and continues to give many concerts accross the world. Her success has earned her the title in Algeria ‘the golden-voiced diva’

Fadwa el Malki was born in Morocco . She soon became one of the most celebrated singers of her generation and has performed on the great stages of the Arab world, including the Cairo Opera, and at large festivals. In 2000 she won the Grand Prix at the Arab Song Festival in Casablanca .
