Born in Sao Luis in the northwest of Brazil , Tania Maria was brought up in a family where everyone played music with great enthusiasm, although they were not professionals. She started piano lessons at the age of 7. Inspired by the rhythms and tempos of Brazilian music, Tania won the first prize in a local competition some years later, playing with a small orchestra founded by her father. This was a seminal event for Tania Maria’s career, and she decided to devote herself to music. After studying law, she started performing in bars and clubs, travelled the world and recorded several albums in Paris . She landed a contract with Concord Records and her first album released under the Piquant label won her a Golden Feather Award.

Tania Maria soon became well known on the Brazilian music scene, where the flexibility of her voice and her touch on the piano won the public’s admiration. Sharing her life between Paris and New York , Tania has performed on the world’s greatest stages, from the Montreux Festival to New Orleans , from Tokyo to Nice. Tania Maria is an accomplished musician, who brings together the swing of jazz with the pulse of her Brazilian roots, the samba and chorinho
