Fès
may be a city of art and culture,
but paradoxically it suffers from
a distinct lack of infrastructure
when it comes to venues and institutions
dedicated to promoting contemporary
art. This city of creativity would
do well to endow such places as well
as promote its own artistic production
as was the case in the past, and reclaim
its position as a meeting place of
the arts.
To this
end, the Fès-Saïss
Association has renovated one wing
of its home, Dar Tazi, and consecrated
it to art and cultural life. This space
will be the primary art gallery in
the city, and carries the name ‘Galerie
Fès-Saïss’. Safeguarding
part of this exceptional piece of architecture
and giving it a new vocation is not
only to contribute to the enrichment
of our heritage in this place of memories,
but also to participate in the spirit
of patronage which is giving a new
look to art and culture in our country.
Exhibitions, seminars, meetings, debates
will be organised here, all year long.
Artists, photographers, architects,
designers can all exhibit their works.
The Fès-Saïss
Gallery will be inaugurated with an exhibition
of a collection of the works of Fouad
Bellamine, Mustapha Boujemaoui, Hassan
Slaoui and Adberrahim Yamou.
Fouad Bellamine

(…)
The paintings of Fouad Bellamine will
catch you by surprise … whether
the painting itself, the quest for light expressed in the picture, whether real
or imagined. His work is about attitude, about the artistic engagement of the
artist who makes his painting the heart of the enigma where the key might be
hidden in a detail, in a colour, or in the very light of the work … in
which only observation can detect .(…)
Mustapha Boujemaoui
Since the 1980s, Mustapha
Boujemaoui has been exploring the
universe of specific objects (whether
common or sentimental) in the cultural
environment in order to integrate
them into his artistic project where
the objects become philosophical.
It was in 1986 that he started the
first printing on glass as in old
pictures (the imaginary gardens).
The Rabat public were able to view
the series of glassware from 1992.
In 1993 he explored tea as a pictorial
material and as a subject at the
same time. The glass picture is more
and more tied in with the tea picture.
The artist takes us into a universe
where we can no longer distinguish
between the glass of tea or the artist’s
tea …
Hassan Slaoui

The work of Hassan Slaoui
emanates from the witnessing of a
fugitive moment in eternity. Throughout
his quest for the origin, he has
concerned himself with time that
is incarnated in the medium, the
medium on which has been etched the
circumstantial flux of time, a living
outline. In the bringing together
and the taking apart, the materials
are not just simple props, but through
this treatment, become a vehicle
for the senses and therefore the
construction and destruction become
interchangeable. They no longer oppose
each other but arise from the reality
of their intricacy …
Abderrahim Yamou - « Envol des graines » (Seeds
Taking Flight)

Throughout my work on the vegetable
kingdom, it has always been a question
of being inspired by that which is
alive, exploring the shafts of light
that pierce through leaves, fathoming
that essential energy traced in knotty
branches, disentangling leaves, twigs
and branches interlaced into arabesque
forms over the long path to stylisation .
The current work
is about seeds as the first fruits
of future plants, like the round particles
on the way to becoming the original
humus, like the floating shapes that
restructure space to introduce a dimension
of air. The seeds in flight are suspended
above a space that oscillates between
full and empty, between abundance and
waiting. These floating seeds destroy
that which exists and place the work
in a flexible space that is fecund,
hybrid .
